Selection of a suitable software depends on careful analysis of the needs and cost-benefit. They also provide analytical tools to examine the impacts of ingredient and nutrient restrictions on formula cost and suggest solutions for cost optimization. Advanced software provide means to integrate and manage multiple plants, products and users and allow automation of several formulation functions such as efficient updating of nutrient values of ingredients based on laboratory analysis and generation of product labels.
LP-based feed formulation software have three basic databases, one each for nutrients, ingredients and products. In the context of feed formulation, the constraints are product specifications that are defined as minimum and maximum levels of nutrients and ingredients that the product can have and the objective is to find the lowest cost at which various ingredients can be combined to make the product.
Most software rely on Linear Programming (LP), a mathematical procedure to achieve the best outcome amidst a range of constraints. A wide variety of software options is currently available for feed formulation and all of them will be relevant for aquaculture feed formulation.
